こんにちは。 先日、@ロボ研会長とハワイの観光潜水艦を取材しました！
今回の取材を快く受けていただいたのは、Atlantis adventuresの元操縦士のMr.Almaraz。(Mark Almarazさん、オアフ島担当)

初めての海外の方へのインタビュー。いつにも増して緊張する...
Atlantis Adventuresは、ハワイ以外にも、カリブ海に浮かぶ島「アルバ(Aruba)」や「バルバドス(Barbados)」、 メキシコにある島「コスメル(Cozumel)」や「グアム(Guam)」...などにも拠点を構える会社です。

日本にはまだない「観光潜水艦」の運営を行っているということで ... 操縦士のこと、潜水艦のこと、現地のハワイのこと...など色々聞いていきましょう！
Q.Atlantis submarines now operates undersea tours in Aruba, Barbados, Cozumel, Guam, and Hawaii, of which night tour is available only in Barbados. Are there any reasons that Hawaii submarines have not stepped into operating at night?
（Atlantis Submarineはハワイ外にも拠点がある。そのうち、バルバドス(Barbados)のみが夜のツアーを行っているが、ハワイではなぜ行わないのでしょうか？）

That is a good question you obviously did your research.
(いい質問ですね)
There are different reasons why we don’t do night tour here in Hawaii, but one biggest reason is that basically the cost, the expensive the operating dive day.
(色々と理由があるのですが、一番大きい要因としては夜のツアーにかかる「費用」ですね。)
As you may or you may not know it, Atlantis operates during day here in Hawaii, and our last dive is around 3 o’clock.
(ハワイでは日中にツアーを行っており、最後の便は15:00となっています。)
It doesn’t get dark until about 7 o’clock or 8 o’clock, so we would have to extend our dive day, the additional 3, 4 hours before it gets dark.
(それで、ハワイでは午後7時～8時にならないと暗くならないので、もし夜のツアーを行うことになると、今の営業時間を3,4時間ほど延長する必要が出てくるわけです。)
At that point, we can only do couple more dives for the night.
(暗くなるのを待つだけで結構時間がかかるんですけど、これだけ時間をかけても夜に2,3回ほどしか便を出せないんですね。)
So, the bigger answer is that primarily because we are not sure that the demand will cover the operating dive day.
(ですので、結局「その追加でかかる費用に需要が見合うのか」というのに私たちは懐疑的で、まだ夜ツアーを行っていません。)
Also the enver light is extremely expensive. It will cost over thousand dollars. The cable, additional thousand dollars.
(暗闇を照らす特殊なライトも必要になるだろうし、追加で必要なケーブルなども出てきますよね。これらで何千ドル以上かかってきます。)
夜の海だと、特別な機材も必要になってくるから、初期費用もとても高そう...
That is the reason that we Hawaii doesn’t operate night tour. It is primarily because we don’t think there is a demand for that product.
(このように莫大なお金がかかるので、果たして、その費用に見合うだけの需要があるのか、ということです。)
That means there is a demand in Barbados. It costs a lot of money to operate at night but it has a night tour in Barbados so...(それでは、バルバトスでは需要があるということですか？)
I mean that Barbados have different type of environment, if you have been to Hawaii before, there is a lot more possible things to do at night.
(バルバドスではハワイとは違った自然があるので、夜に楽しめることが多いんですね。)
I lived in Grand Cayman, and at night we used to do night dives as well, it is pretty popular for the night dives.
(私はグランドケイマンに住んでいたことがあって、よくナイトダイビングを楽しんでいました。そこはナイトダイビングで有名な場所なんですよね。)
The demand for the night dives was very good, so we used to do night dives there. Here in Hawaii, there may not be that interest in doing night dives.
(これと同様に、バルバドスではナイトダイビングの需要が高いので、潜水艦も夜の便も出しているのですが、ハワイではそこまでの需要がないと考えているので、ハワイではやっていませんね。)
Q.The guests can see a famous sunken ship called the Carthaginian, which was once a replica whaling ship, which now serves as an artificial reef. How big is it? Also, the Carthaginian was set on sea floor intending that it will be a shelter for sea animals, but can we see any remnants of ships or airliners that actually sunk underwater by some accidents? If so, can you tell us the names?
（carthaginianという捕鯨船を人口座礁として海底に沈めたと知りました。 潜水艦からはその船を見ることもできるとありましたが、意図的に沈めたものではなく、実際に何か不慮の事故で沈んでしまった船や旅客機はありますか？）
昔、ハワイは捕鯨の町だったみたいで、carthaginianという捕鯨船があったみたいです。そのレプリカが博物館に飾ってあったみたいですが、それを今度は人口座礁用に海底に沈めたらしいです。
In Hawaii, because of the different restriction, we only allow to operate the certain areas, so the areas we are allowed to operate, we put all the artificial wrecks there. So, we put down a large ship. You are asking that if there are any sunken ships or any planes are crushed on the lanes.
(ハワイでは様々な厳しい制限があって、決められた特定の範囲内で潜水艦も動かしていて、そこに大きな船なども人口座礁として設置しているのですが、私たちが意図的に設置したのではなく、衝突したりして墜落してしまった飛行機が海底にあるかどうか、ということですよね？)
…. Oahu no, Maui no, there are two small boats that have sunken our corner site. They get to see those.
(オアフ島とマウイ島では、ないです。一方、端っこの方では２つの沈没船を見ることができます。)
And then canmeinside , there was a large container ship that is sunk, that is called “calele” .
(では、「ケレレ」(?)という沈没した大きなコンテナ船がありますね。)
Here in Hawaii, on Oahu, all those s and all the planes, we put them down. So because we are limited locations where we can operate, Whatever within the area, it’s all we can see.
(ハワイでは、厳しい制限などがあって(海中で)行くことのできる場所が限られています。そのため、その範囲内で私たちが見ることができるのは全部、意図的に沈められた船や飛行機となっています。)
It is very impressive when you see them underwater.
(潜水艦から見る海底の船や飛行機は素晴らしいものですよ。)
I wish I could see it after this covid.(行って見てみたいです！)
Q.Can we see Humuhumunukunukuapuaa from the submarine?
（「フムフムヌクヌクアプアア」という魚を潜水艦から見ることは出来ますか？）
フムフムヌクヌクアプアアはハワイ州の魚として指定されている。

There is a quite few fish that swim next to the submarine. You can see them right outside the freeport. Big fish, small fish, turtle…
(大小さまざまな魚、ウミガメ….など沢山の魚が潜水艦の横を泳いでいて、窓から見ることができます。)
They all attracted to swim alongside the submarine.
(みんな、潜水艦と一緒に泳ぐのが好きみたいですね)
Is it seasonal what fish we see?(その生き物を見ることができるのか、というのは時期によるんですか？)
We are at mercy of mother nature. So, whenever the mother nature wants to show us, we get to see it. Sometimes it is seasonal depending on the site, sometime seasonal fish animals come in the area.
(どんな生き物を見れるかは、自然界の為すがままです。見れるときには見れるし、見れないときには見れません。ただ、もちろん時期によってその場所に来る生き物もいますね。)
In Maui, they are able to see the whale underwater.
(マウイ島では、クジラを海中で見ることができます。)
Whale?(クジラ？？)
Yes, yes. Humpback Whale! Very impressive.
(はい、ザトウクジラです。すごいですよ！)
Are they able to move the submarine?(クジラは潜水艦を動かしたりしてくるんですか？)
If they wanted to yes, but they don’t see us as a thread. They just look at us.
(動かすことはできると思いますが、彼らは私たちのことを脅威を感じていないので、ただ見つめてくるだけですね。)
We have variety of different fish, dolphins and whales, mammals. They look at us, they are curious, and they continue swimming.
(色々な魚、イルカやクジラなどの哺乳類を見ることが出来ますが、彼らはただ興味深そうに見つめてきて、特段何もせずに泳ぎつづけています。)
We enjoy the show.
(色々見ることができるのが楽しいですよ。)

How often can we see the whale?(どのくらいの頻度でクジラを見ることができるのですか？)
During whale season, it is usually December to April,
(12月から4月にかけて、クジラのシーズンだったら結構な頻度です。)
Mostly from the surface, but in Maui, because there are so many whales in Maui location, they see them underwater as well.
(大体、海面で見ることができるのですが、マウイ島周辺では海中でも見ることができます。)
Q.Visitors sometime can see sharks from the submarine, can it go so close to shark?
（潜水艦からサメを見ることができるとありましたが、潜水艦は至近距離まで近づくことができるのですか？）
Yes, often here in Oahu, we see sharks.
(はい、オアフ島周辺ではよくサメを見ますね。)
They come right by us and swim by us and continue on.
(彼らは潜水艦のところまで来て、一緒に泳いでいるので、とても近くで見ることができますね。)
Sometimes Whitetip reef shark sit on the ocean floor, we can go to it and see the shark. So yes, again they are not bothered by us they are curious.
(時々、ネムリブカが海底にいるので、潜水艦から近づいていって見ることもあります。彼らは潜水艦を脅威に感じていないので、近づいても問題なくて、あっちも興味深そうに見てきます。)
When you are in submarine and see the shark, it is fantastic! When you are scuba diving it is scarious.
(潜水艦の中からサメを見るのは、とても感動的ですよ！スキューバダイビングをしているとき遭遇するのは、とても怖いですが(笑))
In submarine we feel like superman.(潜水艦の中にいると、何も怖くないので、スーパーマンになったかのように錯覚しますよね(笑))
We don’t feel danger when we meet sharks, and they don’t feel threatened.(では、お互いの存在を脅威に感じていないということですね。)
That is correct. Curious What in the territory.
(そうですね。サメとしても彼らのテリトリーに何がいるのか気になっているだけですね。)
Q.What is the biggest shark you have ever seen?
(今まで見た中で一番大きいサメは何ですか？)
Oh, I believe there were two big shakes. Hummer big shark and tiger shark.
(大きかったのは、シュモクザメとイタチザメですね。)
And I don’t recall the rank of it, but the big one is that between 12 to 15 feet.Those are the very big fish.
(正確には思い出せないですが、12~15フィート(約3.7m~4.6m)くらいでした。とても大きかったですね。)
The biggest shark I have ever seen is a whale shark.It is humongous. It is 30 feet. (それで、私が見た中で一番大きかったのはジンベイザメでした。めちゃくちゃ大きかった…30フィート(約9m)くらいでしたよ。)

The one I saw, came by the submarine. It is humongous. It is just curious and swim away. It was beautiful, the colors on it…
(そのジンベイザメは潜水艦のところまで来たんです。潜水艦が気になって来たんだと思います。その後、泳いで去っていきました。色などとても美しかったです。)
Do children often come to the submarine?(小さい子もよく潜水艦に来るんですか？)
Yes, yes, we have the school group that come out.
(はい、学校の団体などもよく来ます。)
All different ages from very young children to high school to college. During the summertime, a lot of people come with a family. We get a good number of kids.
(とても小さい子から高校生、大学生まで色々な年の子達が来ます。夏休みには、家族連れが多くなりますね。)
Q.Do tourists ever get seasick or panic while they are underwater? If so, how do you deal with the problem?
(潜水艦でお客さんが酔ってしまうことはあるのでしょうか？その場合、そのどのような対応をするのですか？)
You know some people get seasick, and some don’t at all right?
(そうですね、酔う酔わないというのは、人によりますよね。)
When you are in the submarine, you don’t get seasick. The reason for the is that you are underwater, you are not the surface. It is very smooth. It doesn’t move like a boat on the surface.
(ただ、潜水艦にいる時に酔うことはありません。理由としては、海上のボートに乗っているときみたいにゆらゆら動かなくて、とてもスムーズだからです。)
So, if anyone gets seasick, it is because they get seasick on the boat ride to the submarine. Many of them once again, the submarine goes underwater, they are ok. They are able to calm down.
(潜水艦に向かう途中の船で酔う方がいますが、多くの方は、いざ潜水艦に乗って海中に潜ると、問題なくなります。)
Gests who are panic, they tell us I am afraid, so what we do is we board them last, we board them last so that they are in the submarine for s shorter amount of time.
(動揺してしまっている方は、ちゃんとスタッフにその旨を伝えてもらいます。そういう方がいる場合は、その方たちを最後に潜水艦に搭乗させて、乗る時間を短くさせますね。)
When we close the door, we ask them are you ok, when they say yes, we are ok, we will continue with the dive.
(扉を閉めるときに、ちゃんと大丈夫か確認して、大丈夫そうであれば、そのまま潜水艦が出発します。)
Many of them do fine, but there is someone who is really afraid and just can’t do it. We will open the door and let them out and we will take them back.
(ただ、本当に怖がってしまう方がいる時もあるので、その時は(潜水艦には乗せずに)その方たちを帰します。)
They are actually brave because they know that it is scary, but they tried anyway. We give them credit that they tried it. But it is just too much for them.
(彼らも、怖いけど乗ろう、としているところが勇敢で、すごいと思います。ただ、その時はダメだったということですね。)
But everybody who comes to Hawaii, pretty much everyone, fries here right. So, the submarine is just like an airplane. If they are ok on an airplane, they are ok with the submarine.
(ただ、ほとんど皆さんはここハワイに飛行機で来ますよね。もし飛行機で問題ないのであれば、潜水艦に乗っても大丈夫でしょう。)
Q.How is a submarine’s captain chosen? Do they need a driver license for the submarine?
(どのようにして潜水艦の操縦士は選ばれるのですか？なるために必要な免許はありますか？)
Yes. In Hawaii, actually in united states, we are regulated by US coast guards. You know in Japan I know Japan has similar types of operation.
(ハワイでは、潜水艦はアメリカの沿岸警備隊によって規制されています。日本でも同じような稼働体制があると思います。)
In order for us to get a pilot, pilots have to basically be trained for 2 years, to become a pilot.
(潜水艦の操縦士になるためには、二年間の養成期間を経る必要があります。)
For the Atlantis. We have our own school, it says `Atlantis summer school pilot training course”. We are regulated by the coast guards. And the coast guards approved of our training program.
(私たちの会社では、独自の養成学校があり、沿岸警備隊が承認することで、仕事として行えるようになります。)
And pilots are required to do hundreds of dives. So, it takes about 2 years for them to clear. There is a lot of tests.
(操縦士になるには、何百回という操縦が必要になるので2年かかるわけです。テストもたくさんありますね。)
Once they complete their captain license, the submarine endorsement they allow us to operate the submarine. The coast guard give them a license and they can work with us as a operator. It is a process it is about 2 years to become a pilot.
(操縦士の資格を取得すると、潜水艦を操縦することが認めらます。沿岸警備隊が認めるわけです。2年かかるので、大変な道のりですね。)
Q.As you have many global sites other than in Hawaii, do you plan to further develop your business to other areas, such as Japan?
(世界に拠点がいくつかありますが、日本に進出する予定はありますか？)
I am sure you know many Japanese people live in Hawaii; many people tell us Okinawa. They tell us We should put submarine there; it has a lot of wrecks from a war time.
(そうですね、ハワイにはたくさんの日本の方が住んでいて、皆さん沖縄のことを教えてくれます。戦争のときの難破船などたくさん海底にあるはずなので、沖縄にも拠点をもったらどうかと言っていますね。)
They mention not only they have a lot of wrecks but sea.
(海も綺麗らしいですね。)
We have looked at other places in the US, we put outside the US. so yes, I mean there is still chance to that we will continue looking for a new site.
(私たちはアメリカの他の地域や国外へ進出も考えているので、もしかしたら沖縄にも進出するかもしれませんね。)
So, as you get older, you can start your own business so the Atlantis may go to Okinawa.
(何年後かに潜水艦関係で起業してもらったら、実現するかもしれないですよ(笑))
Yeah, we can start new business in Okinawa lol(そうですね、してみたいです(笑))
Trying to make some money.(お金を稼ぎましょう(笑))
You have a good future so yes!
