先日、海洋大生2人でハワイの観光潜水艦を取材しました！
今回の取材を快く受けていただいたのは、Atlantis adventuresの元操縦士のMr.Almaraz。(Mark Almarazさん、オアフ島担当)

Q.How do you maintain communication in the submarine when you are underwater?
(海中にいる時、どのようにして潜水艦からコミュニケーションを取るのでしょうか？)
Good question.
On the surface submarine uses regular VHF radio and as you start the dive, we switch to underwater telephone.
(潜水艦が海面にいるときは超短波（VHF）を使用し、水中に潜り始めると水中通話器に切り替えます。)
We also have on a surface boat, we call it a control boat, that stays on top of the surface, it monitors that the surface and makes sure that everything is clear and safe. It maintains communication with the submarine all the time, while it is underwater.
(また、「Control Boat」というボートが常に海面上に居て、周りで何か問題がないかを確認しています。潜水艦が水中にいるときは、このボートと常に連絡を取り合っています。)
Is it connected with the tether cable?
（それはテザーケーブルで繋がっているのですか？）
No. It is a transducer that operates on 27 kilo hertz frequency. And we have underwater telephone on surface boat that has transducer. They look just like little round doughnut basically.
(いいえ。27キロヘルツの周波数を使って無線での連絡です。そのために、丸いドーナッツみたいな見た目をしているトランスデューサー（変換器）あります。)
We contact each other, we speak each other through the water because water is good conductor of sound right?
（水は音を良く通すので、我々は水を介して連絡を取り合っています。）
So, we talk back and forth on a surface boat to our submarine through underwater telephone on a frequency 27 khz.
（27キロヘルツの周波数の無線で海面のボートと潜水艦間でコミュニケーションを取っています。）
so, no cable.
（だから、ケーブルはないですね。）
海面上のボートと、有線ではなく無線での連絡をしている。
Q. Till how far can they communicate?
(どのくらいの範囲で通信が可能なのでしょうか？)
You know because we operate in a certain area, we use a frequency that is clear but short.
(そうですね、潜水艦が動く場所は決まっているので、その範囲内ではクリアで短い周波数を使っているのですが、)
short?（短い？）
When I say short, I would say maybe a couple miles. But you can use other frequency that are higher, better and longer distance.
(「短い」というのは、大体2,3マイル（3.2km-4.8km）ですね。だけど、もっと高くて長い距離の周波数のものも使うことは可能です。)
So, for deeper submarine, you just have to choose the frequency and that allows you to communicate through the water at different range and different depth.
（もっと深い場所に潜る潜水艦の場合など、正常に水中でコミュニケーションが取れるように、深さによって使う無線の種類を選ぶ必要があるということです。）
Q.What makes you want to be a submarine pilot?
(なぜ潜水艦の操縦士になったのですか？)
I have always wanted to work on the submarine. I love biology, marine biology, and marine technology.
(小さい時から生物学、特に海洋生物学、それと海洋工学が好きでした。)
I was going to school of marine technology, and they said would you like to be a pilot of a submarine? And I said yes!
（それで、海洋工学の学校に行ったのですが、そこで「潜水艦の操縦士になりたいか」と聞かれたので、「Yes!」と答えましたね(笑)）
So, they gave me an opportunity to learn how to flight your submarine and I became a pilot in Grand Cayman.
（そのようにして、潜水艦の操縦方法を学ぶ機会をくれて…それでグランドケイマンで働くようになりました。）
So, when you are a little boy, was there a submarine in Hawaii?
(小さいころにハワイに潜水艦ってあったのですか？)
No.
（いいえ。）
No?? So, how do you come up with an idea to be a submarine pilot?
(そうなのですか？よくなろうと思いましたね？)
So, I wanted to be a deep-sea biologist. I wanted to go down with the diving bell and learn about what is down there in the very deep. So, I was going to school and leant and how to use diving bell.
(深海にはどんな世界があるのかを知りたくて、深海生物学者になりたかったので、学校でダイビングベルの使い方も勉強していました。)
Diving Bell : 潜水鐘のこと。潜水装置の一つで、水上から空気が常に送られる。
It is basically one robot suit, you can cloth inside and you can go down very deep so that is like submarine. So, when I heard that Atlantis is offering jobs to pilot submarine to see the marine life, that was great chance for me.
(それはロボットが着るものみたいなもので、着用すると深いところまで潜れます。潜水艦のようですよね。だから、Atlantis（会社）が潜水艦の操縦士の募集をしていたことを知ったときは、チャンスだと思って応募しました。)
That is about 35 years ago.
（…これって35年前のことですけど(笑)）
Is it deep in Hawaii??
（ハワイの海は水深が深いところもあるのですか？）
Yes. if you are looking to go deep, yes there are places to go in Hawaii. However, if you are looking to see marine life, as you are studying marine biology, the more of marine life is in the shallows. For us we enjoy showing our guests the marine life, so that keeps us in water less than 100 feet.
(水深が深いところはありますよ。ただ、生き物を見ることができるのが浅いところなので、潜水艦は100フィートより深く行かないです。)
Is it possible to have a light and then go deep more than 100 feet as I think you can see fish or some strange sea creatures with a light?
（潜水艦にライトをつけて100フィートより深く行くことはできるのですか？深いところには見たことがない生き物とかも住んでいると思うので行ったら面白そう。）
You can see it without light, but in the Cayman Island it drops down to 800 or 1,000 feet, 1,500 feet and even further, our submarine is a small submarine and can go 800 feet, 1,200 feet. That is cold and you can see whole different types of marine life down there. Very different but not too much. You know, a lot of darkness. So, we stay in a shallow area as the guests want to see colorful fish sharks, lays, turtles.
（実際は光がなくてももっと深く行けるのですが、ここでは800, 1000, 1500フィート、またはそれよりも深いところがあります。私たちの潜水艦は800-1200フィートまで行けますが、深いのであまり生き物を見ることができません。ですので、カラフルな魚、サメ、エイ、カメ…など様々な生き物を見ることができる浅いところまでしかいかないというわけです。）
「観光」なので、生き物がいるエリアまでしか行かないのだ。
Does the Atlantis submarine have the capability to go more than 100feet?
(Atlantis Submarine（こちらの会社の潜水艦）は100フィートよりも深く行けるのですね。)
Yes, the coast guards regulate us, and they say we can only go down to 150 feet.But when we test the equipment on the submarine, we go much deeper with the coast guard. We are sure that submarine handle much deeper.
（はい、沿岸警備隊の管轄の下で潜水艦が動いているのですが、150フィートまでと決まっています。ただ、潜水艦の道具のテストを行う時には、それよりももっと深く行きます。）
Are there any people when testing?
（そのテスト時には誰か乗っているのですか？）
Yes, it is us! Lol And our engineer yes.
（はい、「私たち」ですよ！(笑) それとエンジニアもね。）
Aren’t you scared? lol
(怖くないですか？(笑))
No because it is so safe. Very safe.
(いいえ、安全だと分かっているので怖くないです。)
Q. I think people can enjoy the underwater world with no time limit if they are in the submarine, while there is a time limit when we do scuba diving by ourselves. Also, disabled people who find swimming by themselves or wearing a marine suit difficult, can enjoy being underwater and watching sea creatures. What do you think is the difference between scuba diving and submarine tour?
(スキューバダイビングと違って、潜水艦では障害のある方も楽しめたり、もっと長い時間楽しむことができると思います。他にはどのような違いがあると思いますか？)
Your examples are correct. Scuba diving is more physical sport.
（そうですね。スキューバダイビングは体力が必要となるスポーツです。）
I don’t know if you have been scuba diving or not. But you carry your tanks, and it is so heavy.
（スキューバダイビングの経験があるか分かりませんが、潜る前には重いタンクを運ぶ必要もあります。）
The number of people who can scuba diving is not so much because of physical requirement, but the number of people who can go on a submarine is much higher. There is no physical requirement other than being able to go down into a submarine. That is the only limitation.
（スキューバダイビングをやる人より潜水艦に乗る人の方が多いのも、前者は体力的な制限があるからです。潜水艦は特に何も必要としません。）
You can go on with a youngest brother and little sister at the same time and you can all sit and talk to each other while you are underwater. If you want to, you can eat and drink but as you know we can’t do it when scuba diving.
（それと、潜水艦では水中にいながら、話したり食べたり飲んだりすることができます。）
So yes, you do have restrictions in scuba diving because of the pressure, but we don’t feel any restrictions in the submarine. You can go on the submarine and go straight to a flight. You can’t do it when you are scuba diving, you are supposed to wait extra number of hours before you go to flight.
（スキューバダイビングでは水圧の影響で、潜り終わった後に飛行機に乗るまで何時間か待つ必要がありますが、潜水艦ではそのような制限もないので、そのまま飛行機にも乗ることができます。）
The submarine is available to a lot more people of a lot more different levels of physical fitness. It is good for families, good for elderly, good for young. There is no physical requirement.
(ですので、潜水艦は若者からお年寄りまで全ての人に楽しんでもらえます。)
So, it allows us to carry a lot of guests at the same time.
（あと、一度に沢山の人を乗せることも潜水艦の特徴の一つですね。）
体力的な問題がある人は、潜水艦があると嬉しいですね。
Q. Is it possible to share with me the drawing of the submarine?
(潜水艦の図面を見たいのですが…)
I am sure you understand we don’t share our drawing. It is confidential right?If you ever visit Hawaii, I would be happy to show you, ok?
(図面は機密情報なので、いま共有することはできませんが、ハワイに来た時に喜んでお見せしますよ！)

We have several hundreds of drawings here on our submarine. The mechanical side…There are another 500 drawings on publications.
（機械的な観点からの物など、数百の図面がありますよ。公開しているものでは500こくらい別にあります。）
Some of the basic drawing I can’t show it because it is a big secret. But If you have ever came and visit, let me know, I will give you a tour!

Q.How much does it cost annually?
（一年でどのくらいの費用がかかるのですか？）
Yes, they are expensive. As you probably have heard of, the sailboat that just sits on the surface, is expensive to maintain and operate because the ocean is a harsh environment.
（とても高いです。例えば海面にいるだけのヨットも、維持して動かせるのもかなりのコストがかかります。海は過酷な環境なので。）
様々なことを考慮する必要がありますね。
The submarine is even more expensive because it goes underwater so the operating expenses are high. We are consistently checking and testing the equipment and we are replacing it where is out. It is similar to an airplane.
(潜水艦は水中に潜るのでもっと高いです。機械を問題がないか確認したりテスト行ったり、問題があるところは新しいものに変えたりする必要もあります。飛行機みたいなものです。)
To answer you, the single submarine, the operating expenses are about 2 million dollars the year. Everything that goes to ocean has to be protected from ocean, so it is either stainless steel or a type of material that doesn’t corrode, and those are much more expensive to buy and maintain.
(質問に答えると、潜水艦のコストは年に200万ドルくらいですね。海で動くものは海水から守られている必要があるので、ステンレスかスチール、それか海中で問題ない材料を使います。これらはとても高いです。)
Is a ticket price profitable?
（そんな中で、利益は出ていますか？）
Yes. The reason for that is the amount of the quests.
（はい。お客さんが多いので利益は出ています。）
So, the submarines are expensive to operate and maintain and our staff and crew. But the amount of money we charge is not cheap, that is a good amount of money, right? So, we are profitable.
（潜水艦の維持管理や人件費も高いですが、チケット自体は安くはないですよね。ですので、利益はあります。）
I mean when you start business to be profitable, and you are not profitable you are in a wrong business.
（そもそも、利益が出ていないなら、それはビジネスとして間違った道を歩んでいることになりますよね(笑)）

（海洋大生に向けてメッセージをください！）
Atlantis share the same type of passion. As we all know, our world needs to rely on the health of marine science and marine life. We have been doing a lot of damages to our globe.
(私たちは皆さんに海に対する情熱を届けています。この世界にとって、海の科学と生態系は必要不可欠なものですが、私たち人間はその自然を壊し続けています。)
It is so unfortunate that the future generations have to pay the price for our laziness and ignorance, so it is up to you guys as the youth and future students to take care of us and take care of our marine life.
（私たちの怠惰と無知のせいで引き起こされたこの環境問題に対して、将来の人たちが代償を払い必要があるのは、とても心痛いことです。若い世代や未来の学生が海洋生態系を守る必要があります。）
So, all of us can enjoy all the benefits that mother nature has given. So, I wish you a lot of success in your studies and we do need you to continue to learn and graduate and to chase your passion and make our underwater world healthier so, so sorry and thank you.
